My friend and guide/mentor Tom Evans kindly invited me to share what I know and what I’ve worked out on his regular Monday evening show on The Barefoot Broadcast, “Moments of Light” – here’s the recording of it. We range far and wide through the topic, and the core message is that we really all deserve to, in fact have a duty to, focus on the work we love, finding that balance between the inspiration to take it up at all, the intuition that it’s the right thing for us, and the intellectual knowledge that we can create a business out of it.
Enjoy listening, and if – as I do – you find Tom’s style delightful, do listen in to his show whenever you can, or check the Barefoot Broadcast archives.

No doubt you’re like all of us – you want to do something you love for a living. Life’s for too short to spend half your waking hours doing something that doesn’t bring you joy. Yet somehow, it’s all too easy to slip off the path isn’t it, to end up doing all sorts of work that you don’t really choose, to become a Busy Fool?
In business, particularly if you’re the principal of the business, it’s essential that your clients and prospects see that you do what you preach. It’s all too tempting to fall back on the old “cobblers shoes” argument – you know, the one that says the cobbler’s children always have shoes that are falling apart.
Some of us love spreadsheets and analysis. Some folks love going out networking and talking to loads of people. Some like working one-to-one with people in coaching, counselling or consulting. Some love messing about with computers, keeping them running and defending them against hacking and virus attacks. And some are happy working outdoors in all weathers. I firmly believe that for every task that needs doing, there’s a person who will find joy in doing it. And it’s different for everyone.
If you’re going to make a living doing what you love, you’re going to need to be paid. Otherwise it’s just a hobby – maybe one you absolutely love, but a hobby nonetheless. My friend and guide
